5 Journaling techniques for documenting everyday life - Sahin Designs

Hello! I’m so happy to be here sharing with you some of my journaling techniques. Project Life is one of my favorite projects and I use it to tell my family stories. This is my goal when I create, as I don’t only want to make beautiful layouts, I mainly want to document the facts and the feelings of our life.

So in this article I’m going to talk about five different approaches I use for telling the stories of everyday life.

In this page using Limited Edition collection you can find three different techniques we are going to talk about: In “this is so special because” card, you have a list of several facts of the week. In the card with the two pictures of my daughter cooking, I’ve written the sentence she says every time she “cook” for me “now I’m the mum, my darling it’s diner time” and in the card with two photos of my daughter and my hubby playing together, I’ve talked about my feelings when I see them spending time together.

  1. Quoting

Quotes can mean many different things, and give us another way to think about the moments in our everyday life and to tell a more meaningful story. I usually quote my daughter’s phrases. She is 4 now and it’s amazing to listen the things she can say! Sometimes I want to express something, but I don’t know how. So I look for a quote talking about the theme I want to talk in Pinterest. You can also check in your favorite pieces of writing or your favorite music, to look for inspiration.

  1. Family conversations

Other technique I love to use, and it’s somehow a variation of the precedent, is to document not the moments but the exact words that were said, the conversations that we have in our everyday life.  I found this much more funny and personal than just including what we were doing. This includes conversations that you overhear, and not only these ones in which you are participating.

In this spread using Travelogue collection I have two of the funniest conversations with my daughter I can remember, both related with pranks of hers and the way she finds to explain the facts to me when I catch her.

  1. Feelings versus facts

I like to talk about how I feel about the time I spend with my family, not only the fact but how I feel about it and what it means to me.

  1. Lists

Lists are a great way to document current favorites or information about our life. Food of the week, books and/or TV shows you are currently reading/watching…

You can also use several key words that represent the events or stories recorded in your spread. You can just write a few statements that tell the stories for you.

As I didn’t have enough place in my page to include this list, I used a tag from Rooted collection to write a list of the things that worked well for me that week.

  1. Let your family be an active part of your PL

Ask to your couple or your kids to write something for your Project Life® album (this is a great way to document your kids handwriting at different ages), or do a little interview to the members of your family about their current favorites. My little girl is now beginning to write, and I haven’t use her handwriting in my PL for the moment, but I have several pieces of art on it!

When I documented an afternoon painting with my daughter with her feet and hands, I included an insert with her footprints.

So… there you have it! Thank you very much for joining me here. I hope you can pick some ideas from this article to create the stories of your family life!
