5 Tips for Taking Vacation Photos - Sahin Designs - Photography Tips

Hey everyone, since summer is now here and many of us are planning our vacations, I’ve got 5 simple tips on how to take some great vacation photos.

Get to Know Your Camera Before You Leave

Even if you leave it in automatic mode, understanding how to change the lens or battery, format the memory card, navigate the menu, etc. are all basic things to know. You don’t want to miss a great photo moment because your camera battery has died or your memory card wasn’t inserted in correctly. Take your camera out for a day prior to your vacation and take photos in various places to get a better feel. Buy an instruction book or manual if you need to.

Experiment with Angles

Get down low or aim the camera lens up into the air, basically change the angle in which you see your subject. There have been numerous times I’ve sat (or laid) on the ground to get a fun shot. It also changes up the way you see subjects and this what takes your photography to the next level.

Get Close

At times we get caught up on all of the big things around us but the smaller things can be just as beautiful. Zoom in and really get upclose to your subject. Whether it be dew drops on flowers, a small animal, your child’s face, or a bundle of fruit at the market, take the picture.

Go Wide

After you’ve gotten close, switch to a wide angle lens and take in the entire scene.

Don’t Let Bad Weather Stop You

Overcast days provide some of the best natural lighting for photos. While sunny days are wonderful, all of the direct sunlight causes bright glares and dark shadows, making it a bit more difficult to get the photo you want. Next time you see some clouds, fog, or maybe even some rain (only if your camera is waterproof), take advantage of that because it can add so much character to your photo.

Here are a few last tips

  • Pack light, only bring the necessities. Being weighed down with gear isn’t fun when you’re out and about, plus you don’t want to be a target for theft.
  • Purchase additional batteries and memory cards. This is when getting to know your camera helps. I found out that my camera can only take about 300 photos before it dies so I ended up purchasing 2 additional batteries since I take a lot of photos.
  • Don’t forget to put yourself in front of the camera. Often times we get so caught up in taking the photos, we often forget to photograph ourselves. I’ve used rocks, trees, backpacks, anything stable to set my camera on to get a photo of myself. Investing in a small wireless remote will help.
  • Have fun! Yes I know this is cliche but please have a lot of fun and don’t get too caught up in taking the “perfect” photo.

Now get out there and take some great summer vacation photos!
