Hybrid Scrapbook - My Approach - Sahin Designs
Hi there again! Carolina here to show you a layout I made using the Crafty Fingers collection.
As soon as I saw this collection I knew I was going to have a brainstorm of ideas. Who has ever got their hands ‘crafty’? I’m sure all of us! As it was apparently ‘easy’ subject to find related pictures, I decided I wanted to go further with the subject and make a layout with some pictures that showed something ‘crafty’. Well, I just found some cute photos of my oldest daughter playing ‘paint-me-all-over’ with my hubby while she was trying to actually put some of that paint on her notebook. So cute!
I am not going to explain on this post how I got to composed the layout for it to become balanced but I will explain some of the items I took into consideration before putting together the spread.
The predominant colour of the pictures was my RED daughter’s t-shirt. If you do not know by now, I love coordinating colour palettes either with journal cards and pictures so I previously chose those pictures that have somehow a colour relationship with the collection’s theme. Once I know the pictures I was going to use, I like placing them as follows:
  •  Most of my pictures are 6×4 inches so, those ones are always at the bottom or top of my (forever) design ‘A’ plastic pockets.
  •  If I have some portrait photos I like alternating them so I will always have a filler/journal card, a photo, a JC and a photo on my 3×4 inches row of pockets. If I only have one photo, I will have then 3 filler cards (or one filler card and two JC or two filler cards and one JC). If I don’t have any, I will only use filler and journal card to fill the entire row.
Once I temporarily place them, I go to the collection and first start choosing cards that match the colour palette from my photos. Here is when one of the basis of my hybrid scrapbooking comes: as my pics have a strong presence in terms of that red colour from my daughter’s t-shirt, I want to create contrast choosing cards, papers or elements that are soft patterns or colours to balance the strength of the photos.
Once I choose the cards, I start placing them with the following rule in mind: if the picture is too busy, the pattern from the card next to it mustn’t be so busy. And with this in mind I try to fill up the full spread.
As soon as I am fairly happy with the result, I have previously placed all the elements which have the same palette relationship on a spread ready to print. Those will be the ones which I will use to complete my hybrid layout.
So far, you can have an idea of the composition of the layout on this picture:

For me to create the balance on a layout means that if I have not used so many embellishments on the whole spread, I need to focus the attention on one card that has quite a few of them. So I normally think of a card that can be purposely made for this.

You can see here that one of the cards from the collection I chose has those circles which gave me the idea of the DIY card. I had since a while ago that fabric circle with the it-couldn’t-be-more-appropriate text ‘art happens’ and I knew I was going to use it immediately! Some of the other elements suggested me to use stitching like that stitched word! So, after a bit of circling, stitching and a few more related embellishments, the card just came nicely together as you can see!

A few more simple touches to finish up the layout with traditional scrapbooking elements from the collection and, voila! done!
Hope you found this brief approach to my hybrid scrapbooking useful!
See you on the next blog post!
